In our first GoRuck, I chose to wear my Mizuno Wave Rider 19s (my running shoes) because my old wore out tennis shoes were super wore out and I didn’t want my feet to absolutely hate me during the challenge. I thought I would be buying new running shoes immediately after knowing what they were about to be put through. However, they held up great and cleaned off as if they never even saw all the mud, dirt and filthy water I put them in during the GoRuck.
Because my Mizuno’s held up so well in the GoRuck I chose to also wear them for our first Spartan race. They did clean up nicely after, however, during the race, they were like ice skates. It rained for days up till the event and even the morning of – so the track was super muddy. So prior to our Asheville Spartan Super I scoured the internet for days trying to find the best shoes that will keep my feet comfortable, yet be durable and also keep my feet glued to the ground. After literally 15+ hours of searching online, reading blogs, product reviews, watching YouTube videos, I finally found the right shoes – the Inov-8 Mudclaw 300s!
I have to say, I will be running many races in these shoes. They stick to mud like a fly in honey. My feet were glued to the ground. Going up muddy inclines was so easy it was almost comical – I literally passed people as they were grasping for roots when their feet gave way beneath them going up these super steep hills.
What I was really surprised about was also how well they stuck to river rocks. I kind of thought due to the 8mm lugs that they might be slick – but they were not at all. Interestingly, just a few days prior to this Sprint Super in Asheville I walked through the men’s locker room of Lifetime by the showers while wearing them. I walk as gingerly as possible through this area of the locker room to avoid busting my arse – it’s always slick as can be. So with my Mudclaws on I was being extra cautious. However, as I was walking I noticed I was slipping at all… So then I tried to make one of my feel slip… Nothing. No movement. I can’t believe they stuck so well to that slick of a surface.
The water drainage could probably be a bit better (they don’t have any water drainage ports on the sides like some others do) but seriously I’m not complaining at all. What is a bit cool is the mesh top is water and mud resistant – so when I stepped in a mud puddle, my feet did not get wet. It wasn’t till I submerged them in the river that my socks got wet. This is a nice feature if you are not planning to go through anything too too deep.
